Shonn Olegario is a Filipino trombonist from Austin, Texas and studies in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 2022, Shonn appeared as a guest soloist with the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings. Shonn’s solo endeavors also include winning the North Texas Low Brass Competition(2021), winning the “Best Under 18” category and finishing as a Top 30 Finalist in the Ian Bousfield Getzen Trombone Competition(2021), and advancing to the semifinals of the Southeast Trombone Symposium Youth Competition(2021). As a member of the A2 Trombone Quartet, Shonn advanced to the finals of the 2022 International Trombone Association Quartet Competition and was also a Featured Chamber Performer with the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings.
Shonn has been accepted to study programs such as the Brevard Music Center College Orchestral Institute(2023) and the Domaine Forget de Charlevoix Music Academy(2022, 2023). Shonn is a recipient of the Domaine Forget de Charlevoix Excellence Award and Scholarship(2023). Shonn has received instruction from notable musicians such as Nitzan Haroz, Scott Hartman, Thomas Leyendecker, Toby Oft, Patrice Richer, Weston Sprott, Peter Steiner, Kenneth Thompkins, Jeremy Wilson, David Zerkel, and the Meridian Arts Ensemble. He has studied under the tutelage of Ingram Lee IV, Dr. Jamey Van Zandt, and Joshua Stover.
In his undergraduate studies, Shonn has performed with the University of Michigan University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kenneth Kiesler and the University Opera under the baton of Kirk Severtson. He has also performed with the University of Michigan Symphony Band under the baton of Michael Haithcock and Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Ellen Rowe. Shonn has performed with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and has performed alongside Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians as a member of the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings Brass Choir and Brass Quintets. Shonn was the principal trombone of the Academy Brass Choir at the 2022 Domaine Forget de Charlevoix Music Academy. In 2022, Shonn performed Wynton Marsalis’ All Rise alongside Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as the principal trombone of the U-M University Symphony Orchestra. Shonn has also worked with musicians such as Carl St. Clair, Michael Daugherty, Zhou Tian, and Anthony Barfield.
Shonn is pursuing a Bachelor of Music at the University of Michigan as a Classical Trombone Performance major under the tutelage of David Jackson. He is the Secretary and Historian of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Epsilon Chapter. Shonn is also a Michigan Youth Ensemble manager. Shonn is an S.E. Shires Rising Artist.
