Jack Smid is an active performer and passionate music educator based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to his time in North Carolina, Jack spent time freelancing and teaching in Michigan in addition to completing his graduate work at the University of Michigan School of Music Theatre and Dance. While in Michigan Jack maintained a full private studio while performing with the Adrian Symphony Orchestra.
Before Michigan Jack attended the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he performed with a wide variety ensembles including the Philharmonic, Brass Choir, Brass Band, Baroque Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and the Marching Hundred. At the Jacobs School of Music Jack fell in love with the idea of being able to find a balance for both his passions, performance and music education. Since then he has striven to maintain the balance.
As an Orchestral Musician Jack has performed with the Columbus Philharmonic, The Carmel Symphony Orchestra, The Evansville Philharmonic, and most recently with the renowned North Carolina Symphony. In addition to this, Jack enjoys Opera Orchestra. He has performed an international tour in Mexico with “OperaMaya”, as well as Richard Wagner’s “Parsifal” and other operas at the Jacobs School of Music as Principal Trumpet.
As a recording artist Jack can be heard on Naxos “American Classics” with Maestro Arthur Fagen and has appeared on a Grammy Award winning recording of John Luther Adam’s “Sila: Breath of the World”.
Since relocating to North Carolina, Jack has been enjoying a new chapter in his career teaching as an Adjunct Professor at Fayetteville State University where he is building an active and accelerating trumpet studio. In his free time he enjoys relaxing at home with his partner Anna, and his dog Harley.
Jack is thankful and appreciative to have had incredible mentorship throughout his musical career. His primary teachers include Robert Sullivan, John Rommel, and Tom Tait.
