In the mid-1950s, Yehudi Menuhin and his family discovered Saanenland and Gstaad. The elemental power of nature and the mountains fascinate and inspire him. Not only the gentle alpine landscape of the Saanenland impressed him, but also the meeting of western Switzerland, German-speaking culture and the nearby south with Italianità. Because Gstaad and the surrounding area also offer an ideal environment for the international education of his children (among other things through the institutes "Le Rosey" and "John F. Kennedy International School" located here), Menuhin settles with his family in Saanenland. On walks in the mountains with his children, the city dweller discovers the nature-loving everyday life of the local population.
The Gstaad String Academy has become an integral part of Gstaad Menuhin Festival. Excellent teachers like Ana Chumachenco, Rainer Schmidt, Ettore Causa or Ivan Monighetti share their knowledge and longstanding experience in one-to-one lessons.
Of particular value for the participants is furthermore the opportunity to perform alongside their professors. Being inspired by Yehudi Menuhin‘s approach, Gstaad String Academy follows the tradition of a chamber music concert, involving one of the professors per each ensemble.
