Biography

Allister McGuire

I began playing music when my grandpa started teaching me piano at age 4. I began violin lessons at age 8, and the upright bass at 17. I joined #SUNYPLATTSBURGH in the fall '06 semester, playing upright bass in the chamber orchestra. Before I knew it, I was changing my major to music. Music Theory intrigued me, and soon I began to compose. In 2010, I had my first world premier in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Shortly thereafter, the same piece, "La Tragedia", had its US premier in Plattsburgh, NY. While working with the SUNY Plattsburgh Clarinet Choir on "La Tragedia", I also collaborated with composer Peter Broderick on his project "Numbers".

Following graduation in 2010, I stepped away from music due to health issues. In 2023, after reconnecting with a college friend and low clarinetist, I began to write again and bought an old, beat up saxophone on eBay. In August 2023, my piece "Feisty French Fries" will premier in Plattsburgh, NY thanks to the Plattsburgh Community Clarinet Choir.

Currently, I am working on a multi-movement piece for bass clarinet and string orchestra in collaboration with bass clarinetist Margali Grenier.
