At the Jacobs School of Music, Sy has studied composition with Don Freund, Aaron Travers, and Chi Wang. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where he sang in various choral ensembles over ten years, performed leading roles in multiple musical theatre productions, and became an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America program. Sy’s recent projects include a fixed media piece for 4.1 surround-sound, a commissioned fanfare for the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Trombone Choir, High Expectations (2022), a work for solo guitar in association with the Twisted Spruce Music Foundation, Stepping Into Daydreams (2022), which was awarded a publishing contract with Azahar Press, and an original, 8-bit video game soundtrack, Killing Death (Original Video Game Soundtrack). In 2020, he was invited to participate in the summer composition intensives at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and at the Boston Conservatory of Music while also studying at the Crowden Music Center in Berkeley, California. In 2021, he was awarded the local Ansel Evan Clayburn Scholarship and Lindley Hall Scholarship Award for his musical achievements and leadership performance. In his free time, Sy spends time listening to various podcasts and videos to stay up to date with happenings in the video game and film scoring industries, reading poetry and novels, watching new movies, and avidly collecting video games, video game consoles, and other game-related knick-knacks across the generations of video game history.
