Benjamin South, tenor, is a versatile crossover artist & teacher from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Most recently, he performed as Charlie Dalrymple in Brigadoon and Teague in Higdon’s Cold Mountain as an Emerging Artist with the Seagle Festival and as a featured dancer and chorus in Central City Opera's Amahl and the Night Visitors. He is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance & Pedagogy at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Benjamin South, tenor, is a versatile crossover artist & teacher from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Most recently, he performed as Charlie Dalrymple in Brigadoon and Teague in Higdon’s Cold Mountain as an Emerging Artist with the Seagle Festival and as a featured dancer and chorus in Central City Opera’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. Other notable roles include Sam Polk in Susannah, Eddie Birdlace in Dogfight, and Theodore Lawrence in Adamo’s Little Women. He has enjoyed singing the tenor solos for Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Dett’s The Chariot Jubilee, and many Bach cantatas. A strong advocate for contemporary music, Benjamin has been and is actively involved in workshops, performances, and premieres of new art song & staged works.
In addition to his work as a performer, he has served on music staff as music director, piano-conductor, or assistant music director on many productions including Hadestown, The Sound of Music, Waitress, The Prom, Oklahoma, The Wizard of Oz, The Drowsy Chaperone, High School Musical, Dare to Dream, 13 the Musical, The Turn of the Screw, and Little Shop of Horrors.
He is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance & Pedagogy at the University of Colorado Boulder and the Vocology Certificate at New York University. He holds the Master of Music in Voice Performance & Pedagogy from Ohio University, the Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from the University of North Alabama, and the Estill Figures Proficiency Certification from Estill Voice International. Benjamin studies with Prof. Matthew Chellis and Dr. Nicholas Perna.
