Biography

Kathryn Oettel

Kathryn Oettel currently lives in the Whatcom County area near Seattle, Washington. She is a soprano and also plays piano. She sings in the genres of opera, sacred, classical, and classical crossover music.  

Kathryn started piano lessons at age 5 and was discovered to have perfect pitch by her elementary music teacher.  At the age of 12, Kathryn was introduced to the world of opera. Throughout high school, she competed in piano and solo contests, receiving highest marks, earning participation in the Washington State Solo/Ensemble competition. She also performed in numerous plays and musicals at high school and opera productions of the Pacific Northwest Opera.  

Kathryn studied at Western Washington University and has graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music performance, majoring in voice. She will soon be hosting and performing in local recitals.

2015 - Present
Kathryn has been a guild/chorus member of the Pacific Northwest Opera (formerly known as Skagit Valley Opera). She has performed in may of their operas including Hansel and Gretel (2015), Don Giovanni (2017) Tales of Hoffman (2017), Turandot (2018), La Boheme (2018), Mefistofele (2019), Othello (2022) and Der Rosenkavelier (2023).

2018 - 2022
Kathryn earned her bachelor's at the WWU music department. She has performed many roles in the annual WWU's opera program called Opera scenes; Roles including Blonda from Die Entfurhing, Miss Titmouse from Too Many Sopranos, Adele from Die Fledermaus and Musetta from La Boheme. During the year 2021, she performed in Western's mainstage opera "Orpheus and the Underworld" in the role of Juno. Kathryn has also competed in WWU's concerto competitions and Aria competitions. In the year of 2022, she won 3rd place in the Opera Club's annual Aria competition.
