A native of Las Vegas, Lauren became interested in music while she was a student at the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts, where she studied vocal jazz and opera techniques. After falling in love with comedic opera while singing Offenbach’s “Ah quel diner!” (“The Tipsy Song”) in a high school operatic showcase, she continues to pursue comedy in roles like Serpetta (La finta giardinera), Cunegonde (Candide), and Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos).
Ms. Sutherland received her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from the Wheaton College Conservatory and then moved to Kansas City, where she attends the UMKC Conservatory. At UMKC, Lauren received a Master of Music in Voice Performance in 2019, and is currently a doctoral candidate in Voice Performance, studying under Dr. Maria Kanyova. Her doctoral research includes an overview of the Scandinavian song literature, as well as a thesis on Agathe Backer-Grøndahl’s Norwegian song cycles Barnets vårdag and Sommer. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at UMKC, Lauren teaches private voice lessons to undergraduate students, and has an active private studio.
Her work at UMKC includes Le Feu (L’enfant et les sortileges), Belinda (Dido and Aeneas), the Dew Fairy (Hänsel und Gretel), and Adele (Die Fledermaus). Lauren’s other operatic work includes Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Naiad (Ariadne auf Naxos), and Serpetta (La finta giardinera). Recently, she has performed with the Midwest Opera Theatre, singing both Musetta (La Bohème) and La Suora Zelatrice (Suor Angelica). Currently, Lauren is singing with the Toledo Opera Chorus, and will be in their double bill of Suor Angelica and Cavalleria Rusticana in October,
Lauren is an avid runner and recently completed her third half marathon. Lauren loves games and is a new member of her first Dungeons and Dragons campaign. She resides with her husband, cat, and dog in Ann Arbor, MI.
