Biography

Ssu-Yang (Sophie) Yu

Ssu-Yang is a vibrant cellist who has been performing as a soloist and a chamber musician. Praised for her artistic musicianship, Ssu-Yang performed with the Prague Symphony Orchestra at the early age of 12 and was awarded the First Prize of the National cello competition in 2012.

Ms. Yu frequently served as principal cellist at the Yale Philharmonia and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of the National University of Singapore, performing as guest principal with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and regional orchestras in New York state and New Haven. She has performed with musicians from Berlin, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, London Symphony Orchestra, and Metropolitan Opera. Ssu-Yang has collaborated with notable artists, including Itzhak Perlman, András Schiff, Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, and Louis Schwizgebe, among others. She has worked with world-famous conductors, such as the founder of Verbier Music Festival Gábor Takács-Nagy, Valery Gergiev, Peter Oundjian, Marin Alsop, Christoph Eschenbach, Jun Märkl, Nicholas Mcgegan, Thierry Fischer.

Ssu-Yang has performed at multiple international platforms, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and Lincoln Center in New York City. She participated in music festivals such as EuroArts in Germany, fellowship at the Verbier music festival and Paleo festival in Nyon Switzerland, The Holland International Music Festival in the Netherlands, the Kirishima Music Festival in Japan, and the Academy of the West in the United States.

Ssu-Yang received her master's degree in cello performance at Yale School of Music with a full scholarship under Maestro Aldo Parisot and British Cellist, Paul Watkins. She also learned with well-known soloists Ole Akahoshi and Ralph Kirshbaum during her time at Yale. Besides performing, Ssu-Yang worked as secondary cello and piano lesson instructor teaching undergrads at Yale University. With her passion for music, Ssu-Yang extended her stage and collaborated with the retirement community, and education organization to share his musical experiences with audiences from different backgrounds through the program “Music for All”.Born and raised in Taiwan, Ssu-Yang started learning the cello at the age of 7 and piano at the age of 3 and was accepted by a professional music school in Taiwan at the age of 10. Ssu-Yang continued her bachelor's degree at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore with full scholarship under Professor Li-Wei, Qin, the 11th Tchaikovsky International Competition Silver Medalist and the First Prize winner in the prestigious 2001 Naumburg Competition in New York.

Along the way of her music pursuit, Ssu-Yang has attended many masterclasses with outstanding cellists such as Lluis Claret, Tsutsumi Tsuyoshi, Gary Hoffman, David Cohen, Joel Marosi, and Gábor Takács-Nagy.
