Born in Hong Kong, Chu Ying Lam is an orchestral conductor and Guzheng artist. She is currently a doctoral student at the Peabody Conservatory, studying with world-renowned conductors Marin Alsop and Joseph Young. A highlight of her recent engagements was her professional conducting debut with the Orchestre Métropolitain at Le Domaine Forget de Charlevoix, where she shared a concert with Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Appointed Music Director of the Old Bay New Music ensemble beginning in 2025, she has also served as assistant conductor to Marin Alsop with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Chu has conducted orchestras across the globe, including in Hong Kong, the United States, Canada, and Beijing.
Chu was awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme under the HKSAR to fully fund her overseas studies, earning the honourable title of “Hong Kong Scholar.” In addition to graduate assistantships at the Peabody Conservatory and Penn State University, she is the 2024–2025 recipient of the Loretta Lee Ver Valen Scholarship from Johns Hopkins University. During her undergraduate years, she received numerous scholarships recognizing her outstanding achievements, including the Talent Development Scholarship, Ng Tai Kong Memorial Scholarship, and N.P. Lam Memorial Scholarship for Balanced Education. She was also the 2022 Penn State Concerto Competition winner, a performance widely acclaimed by the audience.
Chu graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Master of Music in orchestral conducting, where she studied under Gerardo Edelstein. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music with First-class Honours from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020, under the tutelage of Miss Luo Jing, Guzheng professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
