Tomás García is an Ecuadorean conductor and composer interested in the collaboration with other artforms to modernize the concert experience. In the 2023 season, he served as assistant conductor of Penn State Opera Theatre’s production of Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites. He collaborated with a lighting designer for the Campus Orchestra’s performance of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. He has also guest conducted Penn State’s Baroque Ensemble, and for two years served as assistant conductor of the Penn State Philharmonic and Chamber orchestras, as well as co-director of the Campus Orchestra. Tomás has served as assistant conductor and company manager of Penn's Woods Music Festival for two summers. An advocate for new music, he has premiered works by Han Hitchen, Austin White, and Jody Goodhart, among others.
In July 2022 Tomás was invited to the LEAD Cooperative program at Wintergreen Music Festival (Virginia) as a conducting fellow, where he conducted in concerts and participated in masterclasses with Carl St. Clair, Erin Freeman, and Michelle Merrill. He has also participated in masterclasses with Donald Schleicher. He recently received a MM degree in Orchestral Conducting from Penn State under the tutelage of Gerardo Edelstein. He also holds a MM in Composition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
In his free time, Tomás enjoys exploring the outdoors through the lens of his camera.
