Colin Miller
(He/Him) About to begin his second year at Rice, Colin studies with Professor Nova Thomas. He made his debut at the Shepherd School as León in Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles. In 2024-2025, Colin won an Encouragement Award in the Houston District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, appeared as Froh in a scene from Wagner’s Das Rheingold and was the Tenor Soloist for Handel's Messiah with the Brevard Music Center. This fall, Colin returns to the Shepherd School as Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, conducted by Louis Lohraseb and directed by R. B. Schlather.

Biography

Colin Miller

Colin Miller is a 23 year old lyric tenor currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, where he studies with Professor Nova Thomas as the recipient of the Renée Fleming Endowed Scholarship in Voice. He is quickly gaining recognition for his expressive, old-school Italian sound, stylistic versatility, and thoughtful musicianship. 

In 2025, Colin made his debut with the Shepherd School Opera as Léon in John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles, conducted by Ben Manis and directed by Patricia Racette, with Maestro Corigliano in attendance. Earlier that season, he appeared as Froh in scenes from Wagner’s Das Rheingold during a public masterclass led by Tonya and Ryan McKinny, presented through the Shepherd School’s Aleko Endowed Masterclass Artist Series. In January, he was honored with an Encouragement Award in the Houston District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. This summer, Colin will travel to Graz, Austria, as a Young Artist at the American Institute for Musical Studies (AIMS), performing in a variety of concerts, including appearances with the AIMS Festival Orchestra singing Nadir's aria, "Je crois entendre encore", from Bizet's Les pêcheurs de perles and making his Vienna debut at the Musikverein Wien in the famed Goldenersaal, performing "Un’aura amorosa" from Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Following his summer in Europe, he will return to the Shepherd School stage as the heroic prince Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, under the direction of R. B. Schlather and the baton of Louis Lohraseb.

At Rice, Colin has performed a variety of diverse roles including Oronte in a concert performance of Handel’s Alcina, also conducted by Louis Lohraseb, and in the Shepherd School’s Lunchtime Concert Series, singing excerpts from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (Tamino) and Beethoven’s Fidelio (Jacquino). He also worked in masterclasses with Grammy-winning baritone Lucas Meachem and tenor Brenton Ryan and continues to expand his repertoire through the school’s artist residencies and performance initiatives.

Colin has maintained a longstanding relationship with the Janiec Opera Company at the Brevard Music Center. Across three seasons as a Young Artist there, Colin has trained and worked with rising and seasoned professionals including the program's director Dean Anthony, conductor Steven White, and baritone Sidney Outlaw. Colin also received a full-tuition scholarship to return to the program after his first year. He has performed a wide range of repertoire with the Janiec Opera Company, most recently singing the roles of Bill in a new production of Jonathan Dove’s Flight and Matt of the Mint in Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera, both under the baton of Maestro Joseph Mechavich. Other featured roles include Jack in Sondheim’s Into the Woods with conductor Craig Kier, and Sancho Panza in Mitch Leigh’s Man of La Mancha. He also covered key roles such as Peter Quint in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw and Remendado in Bizet’s Carmen. His work at Brevard has also included a musical revue of Jerome Kern and Friends under the direction of Andy Einhorn and masterclasses with distinguished artists including Caroline WorraPhyllis PancellaJason Ferrante, and a particularly special masterclass with Broadway legend Patti LuPone. Colin's work with the Brevard Music Center resulted in him being invited back to appear as the Tenor Soloist in Handel's master work Messiah.

Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Colin earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied under Professor Bradley Williams. During his time at NEC, Colin participated in his first Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition where he was named a District Winner of the Colorado-Wyoming district at 20 years old. His performances at the Conservatory included Alfred in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, and a lively turn as the Gingerbread Witch in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel—a role he reprised for NEC’s Commencement Concert in the school’s historic Jordan Hall. In NEC’s opera scenes programs, he also performed selections as Don Basilio in Mozart's Le Nozze di FigaroCount Almaviva in Rossini’s Il barbiere di SivigliaDon Ramiro in La Cenerentola, and appeared in a masterclass with soprano Sari Gruber.​ 

Additional performance highlights include covering Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore with Boston Opera Collaborative and performing a scene as Arnold in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell with the Rivers Symphony Orchestra also in Boston. ​​​
