Description

Inspired by George Seurat’s pointillism masterpiece, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” this beautifully introspective musical speaks to the power of art and human connection. The story follows a fictionalized Seurat in the 1880s and his process creating the painting and revolutionizing impressionism with his new pointillism technique, and his great-grandson a hundred years later similarly trying to make his mark on the world.
“Sunday in the Park” is directed by Rice University fifth-year senior Giovanni Marinilli. Most recently, Marinilli was the assistant director of Rice Theatre’s production of “Comedy of Errors” and performed as Giles in Rice Theatre’s production of “The Mousetrap.” Music director John Amar consults in Kinder HSPVA's instrumental and theatre departments, and is Westbury Baptist Church's pianist. He most recently music directed Rec Room Art's Spring Awakening, and composed original scores for Houston Shakespeare Fest's As You Like It and Rec Room Arts' Death of a Salesman.
In addition to Marinilli, this production features the work of numerous seniors within the Rice Theatre program. Co-producer Edith Ibeke, props designer Izzy Driewer, lighting designer Jules Houston, wardrobe crew member Chioma Modilim, and cast members Katie Maurano, Julian Puerto, and Spencer Rembert are all part of Rice’s Class of 2026 and will be graduating with either the major in Visual and Dramatic Arts with the theatre concentration, or the theatre minor.
