Masterclasses for undergrad (non-performance majors)
This recital dives into Schubert's pedal indications in his solo piano works. It seeks to answer three major questions: 1) Should we pedal in Schubert's piano works? 2) Is there a relationship between Schubert's soft dynamics and pedal use? 3) How can we approach the moderator and shift action pedal on the historical piano?
This recital presents a selection of works with a fantastical spirit by Austro-German composers, including CPE Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schumann and JS Bach/Busoni. For some, this idea of freedom/fantasia translates to improvisations and unmeasured preludes. For others, it gathers into music with the most imaginative narratives.
This recital will be performed on both the Walter piano and modern Steinway.
