THE ALMOST EMPEROR OF THE UNOFFICIAL DEESTRICK OF LAKE MICHIGAN

2022 - Present
It is the 1920s in Chicago, and The District of Lake Michigan is thriving. Led by Cap and Ma Streeter, the lakefront plot of land that houses The District is occupied by a ragtag group of Chicagoans living outside the law. They have been allowed to live there, pretty much undisturbed, for decades, but now they are in the way of millionaire Potter Palmer's master plan to expand his holdings onto Lake Shore Drive. Not one to do his own dirty work, Palmer sends his puppets (The Judge, Sargeant O'Malley, and N.A. Warpbank) to remove Streeter and his followers from the land once and for all in this DaDa adaptation of a Chicago legend.

JANE: ABORTION & THE UNDERGROUND

2022 - 2023
written by Paul Kamen Virtual Film Fundraiser for Women's Reproductive Rights Assistance Program (WRRAP) The part-documentary play is based on original interviews about “the best-kept secret” in Chicago, “Jane,” an underground abortion service that operated from 1969 to 1973. This network, run by a feminist collective of mostly middle-class housewives and students, was the one safe alternative for about 11,000 Chicago women of all backgrounds. In all those years, “Jane,” which boasted no fatalities and operated in private apartments throughout the city, was well trusted by and commonly received referrals from police, university administrators, social workers, clergy and hospital staff.

THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT

2021 - 2022
This production was co-produced in partnership with Jefferson Avenue Mission in St. Louis, MO in September 2021. An implicit critique of state systems of punishment, particularly e courts and individual positions of state power, THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT incites an expansive conversation surrounding restorative justice and beckons the question of what transformative alternatives to these systems may look like. In seeking to building power and relationships amongst the community, we teamed up with FREEDOM COMMUNITY CENTER a St. Louis organization working to end mass incarceration and advocate for alternative approaches to reducing harm and transformative justice. ALL PROFITS from this production were donated to this incredible organization as it works toward its mission here in St. Louis.

ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD

2016 - 2016
An absurdist, existential tragicomedy by Tom Stoppard. The play expands upon the exploits of two minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet, the courtiers Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and the main setting is Denmark.

VISION: Cats Cradle Theatre is a project-based collective that pursues projects of passion, transformation, and curiosity. With our “do-it-together” mentality, we strive to uplift the work of rising artists and invest in new ways of making. At our core, we are dedicated to cultivating community connections and civic relationships, asking ourselves what it looks like “to citizen” through our work.

FOUR PILLARS OF OUR WORK:

1. Pursuing projects of passion, transformation, and curiosity --> The phrase “passion project” implies that the work doesn’t count, or at least doesn’t carry as much value. We believe it’s quite the opposite! Passion projects are a way of finding out who we really are. As a theatre company, we are led by the curiosities and interests of our artists & community. Our decision-making process is guided by each project's heartbeat. The ardent pursuit of projects that are personal and meaningful allows our work to be created not out of necessity for content, but instead for the transformative journey.

2. Investigating new industry projects. --> We can, and should always strive to improve. With each artistic effort, it's important to pause, take stock, inventory priorities, and enact positive, lasting changes. The Cats Cradle community is committed to challenging current standards in our industry while being dedicated to finding and developing new ways of making that support the humans behind our work. From one-on-ones to group check-ins & postmortems, we honor open and honest feedback throughout our process, adapting & responding in the moment.  We believe that our world and those who live in it are constantly changing, and it is our duty to grow and change with it. That is why our mission, values, and practices are always in draft. It is our responsibility to listen to the feedback of those around us, and adapt our practices, policies, and even our mission to serve others.

3. Uplifting the work of rising artists. --> As mostly first generation theater-makers, we understand the obstacles young artists face. We believe it is important to create space and opportunities for makers to do just that - make. While we value the collective of artists who call themselves Cats Cradle Company members, we believe that list should never have a cap, and actively seek out new ideas, new work, and new makers, investing in future generations of creatives.

4. Cultivating community connections and civic partnerships. --> We believe in the power of community. We are invested in creating unique and actionable partnerships in our respective communities. Each project we pursue has a clear purpose in creating or developing civic relationships, always looking for new ways to “citizen.” Learn more about citizen as a verb.
