Biography

Alyssa Weathersby

Alyssa Weathersby is a quickly emerging vocalist and international director and choreographer from Houston, Texas. Her stylistic staging is often hailed as “cleverly designed” and “compelling.” Most recently, Alyssa directed Hansel & Gretel at the New England Conservatory of Music, as well as the Undergraduate Opera Scenes and scenes in the graduate Perkins Opera Scenes programs. While in Boston, she also joined Reagle Music Theatre as assistant choreographer in their production of Pippin. Earlier in 2022, Alyssa directed and sang the title role in Venus & Adonis at the renowned Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Virginia in collaboration with Early Music Access Project and later served as staff at the international summer festival Prague Summer Nights. There, she directed the Scenes Program, taught movement and acting classes, and assisted (staging, choreography, fight choreography) in the productions of Don Giovanni and Le nozze di Figaro at the famous Estates Theatre, where Mozart himself conducted the world premier of Don Giovanni. Other shows directed include Miss Havisham’s Wedding Night (University of Colorado), Viardot’s Cendrillon (Operativo Houston), and a pandemic-inspired interdisciplinary piece of virtual “theatre” that featured Russian repertoire, B-la-F, which incorporated a string quartet, classical singers, and two dancers to share a story of growth, joy, loss, and acceptance. Assistant Director credits include Falstaff (Crested Butte Music Festival), Don Giovanni (PSN), Eugene Onegin, Cenerentola, and Virtual Magic Flute (Opera NEO). Memorable musical theatre and opera choreography credits include FAME!, Newsies, The Addams Family, Pirates of Penzance, Grease!, Chicago, Pirates of Penzance, Rigoletto, Salsipuedes, Il Postino, Firebringer, Shrek, Matilda, Descendents, James & the Giant Peach, and Just So.

Alyssa’s vocal talents have been heard at the opera-house (favorite roles including Venus, Morgana, Blondchen, and Cunegonde), the theater (favorite roles including Mrs. Wilkinson u/s and dance captain, and Blanche Ingram), the stadium (Houston Toyota Center: Josh Groban, and Andrea Bocelli), and the bar (Numbers Houston, Prohibition UWS NYC). She especially enjoys performing new and folk-inspired music (Narrator in Makaris’ Tam Lin, Fionna/Sister Mary Thomas in Epic Fog Productions’ Dublin Rising), and advanced to the live Quarterfinal round of the international American Traditions Competition in 2022.

This summer, Alyssa will join the cast and creative team at the Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre as Assistant Director and Choreographer for Oliver! and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, and as 1st Sibella and 2nd Phoebe covers. She will also be featured in Elton John’s Aida.
