Since 1975, Indianapolis Opera has delivered the passion, excitement and art of opera throughout Indiana with compelling educational, cultural and community activities. The Indianapolis Opera Ensemble program reaches 30,000 children and adults statewide each year, with additional performances in Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky.
Every year, the Indianapolis Opera Education Department creates a brand new children's opera to share with the youngest members of the community, along with their teachers and families. These operas are a part of our Sing Me A Story series, which focuses on bringing the power of opera to elementary school children of all backgrounds. This year's opera, Camilla Paints the Town, tells the story of Camilla the Chameleon who has only ever known a world of black and white. But one day, she discovers her colors and begins to see the world with a newfound wonder. She excitedly brings a little color to the lives of everyone she meets, who each finds the colorful way she sees things to be both intriguing and perhaps a little scary. In the end, we'll see if Camilla's new friends can see the beauty in a fresh perspective! This adaptation features music from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and Così fan tutte.
Every season, the Resident Artists tour all over Indiana to share a love of music and storytelling with the Opera Cabaret Series, which features everything from operatic repertoire to well-known Broadway show tunes and Old Hollywood hits from the Great American Songbook.
In celebration of 50 years of championing the vocal arts, Indianapolis Opera presents a thrilling legacy gala concert at the historic Hilbert Circle Theater in collaboration with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for the first time in 20 seasons. This once-in-a-lifetime event will showcase returning opera stars and world-renowned alumni from IO’s many decades of artistry in the heart of Indiana, alongside members of the Indianapolis Opera Chorus, in a special evening presentation of opera favorites and classic lyric theater hits.
