(She/Her) Sable Strout is a proud New England mezzo soprano born and raised in Maine. Offstage, Sable is usually found at folk-rock concerts, spending time with friends and family in Portland, or experimenting in the kitchen with new vegan recipes. She is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Opera in the Pines, an alternative opera company committed to reinventing the opera experience in Maine.

Biography

Sable Strout

Sable Strout (mezzo-soprano) is a native of Maine where she made her professional debut as Paggio (Rigoletto) with Opera Maine. Most recently Sable performed the role of Flora (La Traviata) with Inland Northwest Opera in Washington state. In the summer of 2022 while in residence with Opera Saratoga, Sable performed as the mezzo-soprano soloist in Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and covered the role of Rosina in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. In the 2021/22 season as an Emerging Artist with Opera Idaho, Sable sang the roles of Olga (The Merry Widow), Mercédès (Carmen), and Sister Lillianne (Dead Man Walking). Before arriving in Idaho, Sable performed the roles of Sorceress (Dido and Aeneas) and Giovanna (Rigoletto) at Central City Opera as an Apprentice Artist. In the spring of 2021 she made her role and company debut as Zerlina (Don Giovanni) with Wichita Grand Opera. In the 2019 season she originated the role of Josephine in the New York premiere of Valenti & Luftig's Story of an Hour with Gramercy Opera, and received the Young Artist Encouragement Award from the Lyra New York Mozart Competition. Previous young artist residencies include Opera on the James and Charlottesville Opera. Sable holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern Maine, as a student of Ellen Chickering, and a Master of Music from Wichita State University, as a student of Alan Held. Sable is currently a private student of Daniel Belcher. Upcoming engagements include company debuts at Tri-Cities Opera and Syracuse Opera singing the role of Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and her role debut of Stéphano in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette with Central City Opera.
